The optical fiber sensor is composed of a light source, an incident fiber, an exit fiber, an optical modulator, an optical detector, and a demodulator. The basic principle is that the light of the light source is sent to the modulation area through the incident fiber, and the light interacts with the measured parameters of the outside world in the modulation area so that the optical properties (such as intensity, wavelength, frequency, phase, and normality, etc. change and become The modulated signal light is sent to the photodetector and demodulator through the exit fiber to obtain the measured parameter.

Fiber optic sensors can be divided into two categories according to the sensing principle: one is a light transmission type (non-functional) sensor, and the other is a sensing type (functional) sensor. In the light transmission type optical fiber sensor, the optical fiber is only used as the transmission medium of light. The perception of the measured signal is completed by other sensitive components. In this sensor, the outgoing fiber and the incoming fiber are discontinuous. A modulator is a sensitive element that changes the spectrum or other characteristics.

In the sensor-type optical fiber sensor, the optical fiber has both the sensitivity to the measured signal and the transmission function of the optical signal, which combines the "sensing" and "transmitting" of the signal into one. Therefore, the optical fiber in this type of sensor is continuous. Due to the different roles played by optical fibers in these two sensors, the requirements for optical fibers are also different. In the light transmission type sensor, the optical fiber only plays the role of light transmission, and the use of communication fiber or even ordinary multimode fiber can meet the requirements, and the sensor element can be flexibly selected with high-quality materials, so the sensitivity of this type of sensor can be very high, but requires more optical coupling devices, the structure is more complex.

The structure of the sensor-type optical fiber sensor is relatively simple, and few coupling devices can be used, but the requirements on the optical fiber are high, and special optical fibers that are sensitive to the signal to be measured and have good transmission characteristics are often used. So far, most of them use the former, but with the improvement of the optical fiber manufacturing process, the sensor-type optical fiber sensor will also be widely used.
